My mother wrote the poem “My Soul Plant” when she started loving my father. So young and hopeful at that time, she still had a faint presage that her love for him would become the origin of much pain in the later years. Yet she loved him with all her heart and never regretted loving him.
Below are the original poem written by my mother, Trầm Hương, and my English translation, which is also the texts for this composition.
My Soul Plant
I hang on my soul plant a bunch of carefree grass
I picked from happiness and suffering
Whether spring comes, I don’t know
Birds sing; flowers bloom; butterflies fly…
With the withering time.
I hang on my soul plant a scarlet, warm and soft heart
The stamens of the flowers that bloom in the spring
And offer him the best of mine
My love
My dream
My essence…
Accept my own bitterness
Which I buried under the roots
I do so
Because I surely know
That my soul plant will live in this world
By the fresh flowers,
So pure.
